Yearly Boiler Cleaning

March 2008

Dear Valued Customer:

Having just completed the heating season, it is time to plan
ahead for next year's season.  Again this year, we will be
offering our boiler cleaning service during the months of
May - September.

SOOT WASTES FUEL

Soot has five times the insulating value of asbestos.  Allowing
it to accumulate in boiler firetubes wastes fuel, a 3/16"
accumulation in the firetubes will waste more than 20% of the
boiler's fuel.  A tube surface with a 1/8" deposit of soot will
transfer only a little over half the heat of a clean surface.
So, if you want your boilers to deliver more heat per dollar
fuel, don't let soot accumulate.  A soot free boiler makes your
energy dollars go further.

Soot also has a naturally low PH due to the sulfur content of
fuel.  Left dirty over the summer months, moisture becomes
sulfuric acid which can deteriorate the metals and shorten the
life of your unit.

 FUEL LOSS DUE TO SOOT

Thickness of
soot in firetube
Efficiency loss
in firetube (%)
Average fuel
loss (%)
 0"  0.0  0.0
 1/32"  9.5  2.9
 1/16"  26.2  7.8
 3/32"  35.7  10.7
 1/8"  45.3  13.6
 3/16"  69.0  20.7

As the cost of fuel rises, having a clean and efficient boiler
will help reduce the amount of fuel that is consumed. This would
be an excellent time to clean your boiler for the next heating
season. Then at a later date when we are able to sustain a load
on your boiler(s) we will return and tune the boiler(s) for
optimal combustion and efficiency.  If you would like us to
schedule you for these services, please check below and indicate
when you prefer the work to be done.  We are updating our files
and would appreciate you including any changes or corrections to
your address, phone number(s), etc.  Please include a copy of
your Vermont Sales Tax Exempt form if applicable.
